The Story Behind
Flat Dumb & Happy

At the Flat Dumb & Happy Foundation, we believe that those who have dedicated their lives to service deserve unwavering support as they transition into new roles and continue their mission of protecting and serving. Founded by William Smith, a former U.S. Army Green Beret with tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq and a San Antonio Police Sergeant, our nonprofit was born out of firsthand experience with the challenges veterans face when leaving the military—particularly those stepping into law enforcement roles. Veterans are no strangers to discipline, leadership, and high-pressure situations, but the transition from military service to civilian law enforcement comes with unique mental, emotional, and professional demands. Many struggle to navigate the complexities of their new careers, access the benefits they’ve earned, and balance their commitment to both their families and their communities. Our mission is simple but vital: to support veterans as they move into law enforcement and first responder roles, ensuring they have the mentorship, resources, and advocacy they need to thrive. We also advocate for those who continue to serve in the Reserves or National Guard while working in law enforcement, ensuring they have the support and guidance needed to manage both responsibilities successfully. The name Flat Dumb & Happy comes from military freefall (HALO/HAHO) operations—a mindset essential for special operators as they plummet toward the earth at 130 mph. To be Flat, Dumb, and Happy means staying stable, trusting your training, and maintaining focus despite the chaos around you. It’s this same philosophy of resilience and adaptability that we bring to our work, helping veterans find balance and confidence in their new careers. We don’t just offer career guidance—we offer a family, a support system, and a lifeline for those who have already given so much. From connecting veterans with experienced ambassadors who understand their struggles to providing assistance in accessing benefits and mental health support, we stand by those who stand for us. By strengthening those who protect our communities, we create a safer, more resilient future for all.
