Hello
Hi, I’m Bill Smith, the proud founder of 'Flat Dumb and Happy.' After serving in the military and transitioning into civilian life, I discovered firsthand how challenging it can be to navigate life’s next chapter. The camaraderie, sense of purpose, and support system I’d grown used to were suddenly gone. I saw so many of my brothers and sisters face the same struggles—uncertainty, isolation, and unanswered questions. I knew something had to be done, and that’s where this journey began.
"This organization is about more than just careers—it’s about restoring purpose, honoring service, and building a future for those who’ve given so much."
From Service to Purpose
My Military Background
I joined the military at 20, eager to serve my country and make a difference. Over two decades of service, I experienced everything from grueling deployments to the unmatched pride of watching my team succeed. The lessons I learned—about leadership, resilience, and the importance of having a team at your back—shaped who I am today."
Transitioning to Civilian Life
"Coming home was one of the toughest battles I’ve faced. There was no roadmap, no guide, and it felt like I was starting from scratch. That transition taught me how important it is to have support, resources, and mentors who understand what you’re going through.
The Birth of Flat Dumb and Happy
The name comes from a saying we had in the military—it’s about trusting the process, embracing the journey, and finding peace even in tough times. I wanted to create a space where veterans could reconnect with a sense of purpose and community, whether they’re looking to join first responder roles or just need someone to guide them through the next steps.
